Cure The Pancreas and Cure Diabetes - Look to The Pancreas to Reverse Diabetes.

When faced with diabetes, there are many things one should do: get good medical advice, exercise more and improve one's eating habits. Often overlooked is the condition of the pancreas, whose ill health can play a vital role in the developement of Diabetes. It is not surprising that some of the things one does to improve your diabetic condition also helps improve your pancreas, especially in the area of changing your diet (diet cures!). Now scientist are finding that taking direct action towards restoring health to your pancreas can reverse your diabetes.

First here is some information about the pancreas. The pancreas is composed of two major types of tissues:

  • exocrine tissue (acini), which secretes digestive enzymes via the pancreatic duct into the duodenum (part of the small intestine leading from the stomach)

  • endocrine tissue (islets of Langerhans), which produces and secretes the hormones insulin (hormone that is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates and the regulation of glucose levels in the blood) and glucagon (hormone that promotes an increase in the sugar content of the blood by increasing the rate of glycogen breakdown in the liver) directly into the blood.
Endocrine tissue contains alpha, beta and delta cells. Beta cells produce insulin and alpha cells produce glucagon. These hormones regulate blood glucose levels. Delta cells secrete the hormone somatostatin, which inhibits insulin and glucagon secretion.

Diabetes

A deficiency of insulin in the body results in diabetes mellitus, which affects about 13 million individuals in the United States. It is characterized by a high blood glucose (sugar) level and glucose spilling into the urine due to a deficiency of insulin. As more glucose concentrates in the urine, more water is excreted, resulting in extreme thirst, rapid weight loss, drowsiness, fatigue, and possibly dehydration. Because the cells of the diabetic cannot use glucose for fuel, the body uses stored protein and fat for energy, which leads to a buildup of acid (acidosis) in the blood. If this condition is prolonged, the person can fall into a diabetic coma, characterized by deep labored breathing and fruity-odored breath.

More About the Pancreas

The pancreas is a long, soft organ that lies transversely along the posterior abdominal wall, posterior to the stomach, and extends from the region of the duodenum to the spleen. This gland has an exocrine portion that secretes digestive enzymes that are carried through a duct to the duodenum. The endocrine portion consists of the pancreatic islets, which secrete glucagons and insulin.

Alpha cells in the pancreatic islets secrete the hormone glucagons in response to a low concentration of glucose in the blood. Beta cells in the pancreatic islets secrete the hormone Insulin.

If you have diabetes or live with someone who has diabetes, most likely you know that a major factor causing the diabetes is insufficient production of insulin by the pancreas. Doesn't it make sense that we should do everything reasonable to improve the health of the pancreas?
