Is it possible to Cure Gout Now?

Many people around the world have heard of gout, but most don't really know what it is. This is an illness that doctors have known about for a long time - yet, today, it does not seem to be part of the layman's medical lexicon.

Historically, gout is identified with wealthy people who have over indulged in fatty foods. But this is misinformation, that has lead to a negative stigma being associated with the illness.

Gout is actually an extremely painful condition which is caused by inflammation of the joints. Wrists and ankles, as well as hands and feet, are often afflicted. Many people also experience a swollen big toe on at least one foot.

Why Do People Get Gout?

Gout, also called metabolic arthritis, is a condition that occurs when the body produces an excessive amount of uric acid. This abundance of uric acid causes crystals to form in the synovial joints, which are the most common and most moveable type of joints in the human body. The build up of crystals puts pressure on the joints and causes the pain and swelling that have become trademarks of this disease.

The excess uric acid is often traced back to a high protein diet among other factors, and the failure of the kidneys and intenstines to effectively elminate the uric acid build-up.

Some in the medical field claim that gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis. Although the condition was once associated with gluttony, health professionals, patients and the general public have become better educated about the causes, symptoms and treatments of gout, which can strike almost anyone. Note that there does appear to be a genetic predispostion to getting gout.

What Are the Symptoms of Gout?

Many people who suffer with gout will tell you that the symptoms seemed to appear out of nowhere. This is one of the unfortunate trademarks of the disease. Symptoms can appear literally overnight. Often it is a big toe that is the first joint system to flare-up.

Patients report feelings of sudden pain, accompanied by swelling around the affected joint. The skin will turn a pinkish red, and appear to be shiny. Left untreated, these forms of "gout attack" can last for about a week.

Another common symptom of gout is lumps that appear beneath the skin, especially around the heels, elbows and ears. The same uric acid crystals that cause pain and swelling in the joints create these lumps, and may even create kidney stones.

A lucky victim may have a gout attack only once in their lives. But most, however, will continue to have attacks of gout over their lifetimes. It is important to seek treatment for gout, because, if left untreated, gout can cause permanent damage in the joints. Be sure to go to a doctor as each new attack of gout comes on.

As this condition can resemble other forms of arthritis, it is not always an easy diagnosis to make from outward symptoms. A complete physical examination and diagnostic tests are required for positive identification.

You doctor may take a sample of your joint fluids to measure the presence of uric acid crystals. Similarly, blood samples may be taken to measure the uric acid levels.
